I joined Medium early on. So early, in fact, that Medium actually hired me to write content for them when they were launching the platform. It was decent money and — even better — I was getting paid to do what I loved doing. Best of all, as an early writer on the platform, I got a lot of views and feedback from readers. I also got to work with all-star editors like Stephanie Georgopulos and others.

After delivering ten articles about digital privacy and security — a series that I named “The Firewall” — I’d fulfilled my contract and Medium stopped paying me. That was the bad news. The good news? They soon launched the Partner Program and recommended that I sign up. I was 100% skeptical of that recommendation but followed the advice anyway.
I’m 100% glad that I did.
It’s All About the Benjamins
I like writing. I do. I do it every day because of how much I like it. But to earn money writing…? That was a dream come true. Someone — in this case all of my readers — was going to pay me to do something that I already liked enough to do for free.
A win-win. Literally. Or, better put: literarily. (See what I did there?!?)
Thanks to the Partner Program, I not only continued to earn money from my writing on Medium, but some months I actually earned more than I had when Medium was paying me. Neato!
That’s no longer the case, but for a good reason: during the past 24 months, I’ve focused on launching my technology newsletter “Tech Talk” and not so much on my Medium brand.
Ironically, it was only when I began developing Tech Talk that I discovered a secret about how Medium tracks its authors’ work.
